Note

It is difficult to decipher the early land records for Farm 6.  The available records suggest that there were multiple generations of Gottfried Hoffmann owning this property from the late 18th century to the early 19th century.  However, they are unclear as to whether it was 2 or 3 generations.

In addition, the farm passed to Martin Hoffmann in 1840.  There are no records that have been found as to who his parents were but likely it was the last Gottfried Hoffmann.  If so Farm 6 was owned by six generations of Hoffmanns over the course of nearly 200 years.

Land Records

dav

Anne Christine nee Kienitz, formerly Hoffmann by marriage, currently Krueger, lives in community property with her current husband, Johann Daniel Krueger.

According to the probate record drawn up by the court on August 22 and November 28, 1826, regarding the estate of the late Elisabeth Hoffmann (nee Kietzmann), the late Gottfried Hoffmann, the late Justine Hoffmann, and the late Ludwig Hoffmann, and confirmed on December 4, 1826, the estate was assessed a value of 930 thalers.

The previous owner, Gottfried Hoffmann, acquired the property pursuant to the contract drawn up before the Schulzen Court in Gembitzer on April 25, 1793, from his father, Gottfried Hoffmann.

Based on this deed of acquisition, the title of ownership for the farm of 47 morgens was registered to the married couple Johann Daniel Krueger by virtue of a decree of June 11, 1827.

Primary records confirm that both Anne Christine nee Kienitz and Elisabeth nee Kietzmann were married to a Gottfried Hoffmann.  The question is whether Anne Christine was the second wife of Elisabeth’s husband Gottfried or the two women were daughter-in-law and mother-in-law.   The land record and three available church records suggest the latter.

Gramsdorf and Gembitzhauland Church Records 1813-1819

Anne Christine nee Kienitz Hoffmann Krüger (1792-1867) had a daughter, Wilhelmine Hoffmann (1814-1886) with the Gembitzhauland farmer Gottfried Hoffmann on August 31, 1814. This Gottfried Hoffmann died between that date, and January 5, 1817.

On the fifth of January 1817 Johann Daniel Krüger, a 27-year-old farmer in Gembitzhauland, the third son of Christopher Krüger of the same place, was married to the widow Anna Christine Hoffmann, née Kienitz, 24 years old.  Anna Christine was the widow of the late farmer Gottfried Hoffmann from Gembitzhauland.

The late farmer Gottfried Hoffmann and his wife Elisabeth, née Kietzmann, lost their second son, Johann Ludwig (1805-1818), age 13, to smallpox on May 13, 1818, in Gembitzer Hauland. Based on this death record for her son, Elisabeth nee Kietzmann Hoffmann, was living after the death of Anne Christine’s husband.

Hoffmann Family Assumptions

From this information these three assumptions can be made.  First, the three individuals listed in the document after Elisabeth were her deceased children Gottfried, Justine, and Ludwig, all of whom had died prior to August 22, 1826.  Second, the Gottfried Hoffmann listed above was the first husband of Anne Christine nee Kienitz now married to Johann Daniel Krüger.  The court then settled the family’s estate by awarding the property to the former daughter-in-law of Elisabeth nee Kietzmann Hoffmann.

Martin Hoffmann

Martin Hoffmann, pursuant to a contract dated December 2, 1840, received Farm 6 from Johann and Anne Christine nee Kienitz Krüger for 598 Thaler and 16 Silbergroschen.  Martin was likely a son of Anne Christine from her first marriage to Gottfried Hoffmann, but that fact is not confirmed.  This contract was written prior to Martin’s marriage to Anna Rosina Krüger (1814-1865).  The couple’s marriage date is unknown but their first daughter, Rosina Wilhelmine is born in 1841. In a similar situation on Farm 34, Christoph Wanke received the title of his father’s farm from his mother and stepfather at the time of his marriage.

Anna Rosina Krüger’s parents are not known.  From her death record on March 22, 1865, her calculated birth is September 1814.  Baptism records are available that would suggest two potential sets of parents.

On November 9, 1814, Anna Rosina Krüger was born to Adam Krüger (1774-1818) and Anna Christina Wanke (born 1775).  Anna Christina was the daughter of Martin Wanke and Dorothea Elisabeth Schmidt, the former owners of Farm 4

A second potential is the daughter of Johann Daniel Krüger and Anne Christine Kienitz also named Anna Rosina born on July 3, 1818.

Martin and Rosina had at least nine children between 1841 and 1857.  The oldest, Rosina Wilhelmine, married Friedrich Wilhelm MIttelstädt, the owner of Farm 3, on December 22, 1861.  On that date Martin is deceased.  In the church record of Rosina’s death in 1865 the notes says that she is survived by nine children, eight of whom are minors.

Rentenkataster 1855 – 1920

On October 1, 1855, Martin Hoffmann is recorded as the owner of the property.

  1. Martin Hoffmann (died between 1857 – 1861)
  2. Friedrich August Hoffmann (1842-1900)
  3. Ernstine nee Westphal Hoffmann (born 1845)
  4. Gustav Emil Hoffmann (born 1869)

Friedrich August Hoffmann was the oldest son of Martin and Anna Rosina Hoffmann.  He married Wilhelmine Henriette Westphal on October 25, 1866, in Gembitzhauland.

Henriette was born February 12, 1845, on Farm 39 to Michael and Anne Louise nee Krüger Westphal.  There is some confusion concerning Henriette’s name in records beginning in 1878 when birth records and other records such as the Rentenkataster record her name as Ernestine.  In 1907 the birth registers for her two youngest children, Martha Ella and Gustav Paul, are corrected to change their mother’s name from Ernestine to Wilhelmine Henriette.

August and Henriette had eight children, only three of whom lived longer than six months.

August died on January 13, 1900, at the sanatorium in Owinski, Kreis Posen Ost.

Property Tax 1863-1865

The widow Rosina Hoffmann is the owner of Farm 6 in these tax records.

Church Affairs and Parish Tax 1876- 1879

For each of the four years August Hoffmann is recorded as a farmer on the property.  In 1876 his Klassensteuer was 12 Marks.  Only two other farmers in the community paid a higher tax.

Building Register July 31, 1890

Neither August, Henriette nor Farm 6 are listed on the building register of July 31, 1890.

The fortunes of the family must have changed dramatically in the 1890s when Henriette was forced to apply for financial assistance from the community.

Building Register June 1, 1907

In this record Emil Hoffmann and his wife Emma Mathilde nee Tonn are now the owners of Farm 6.  Emil is the oldest son of August and Henriette Hoffmann.

The farm consists of a house and three barns. One is a general shed; another is a barn for cattle and the third is for the horses and pigs.

Community Register 1921 – 1933

The community register created after Gembitzhauland (now Gebiczyn) becomes part of Poland lists Emil Hoffmann as living on this property with his wife, Mathilde, and their three living children.

Mathilde nee Tonn Hoffmann was born January 1, 1878 in Ostrowke (German Bismarcksruhm) Kreis Kolmar.  She joined the community of Gembitzhauland on September 10, 1902.  This is likely the date of her and Emil’s marriage.  The couple had a total of five children.

If Martin Hoffmann was the son of the third Gottfried Hoffmann Emil and Mathilde’s children were the seventh recorded generation to live on this property over the course of almost 200 years.
