Note

The history of Farm 3 without further land records is difficult to decipher.  The location of the homestead has been estimated based on the 1826 map and the subsequent 1877 Empire Map.  Today the buildings are gone.

The property that is today Gebiczyn 7 was partitioned in 1865 or 1866 from the northwest corner of the original Farm 3.  On the map below it is marked as Farm 3A.  Based upon the subsequent tax records and the 1922 community register this property was likely Parcel 3B.

The Land Records

dav

Christoph Gottlob Mittelstaedt and his wife Anne Eleonore, née Fedder, following the death of Gottlob’s father, the Holländer Martin Mittelstaedt, acquired the property in pursuant to the inheritance decree of November 28, 1828, for three hundred and eighty thalers and a life estate for his mother, Anne Regine, née Gehler Mittelstaedt.

At a hearing on May 8, 1830, Michael Kropp and Christoph Krueger testified that the deceased Martin Mittelstadt had acquired the property from his father, Michael Mittelstädt, in 1791.  They testified that Martin Mittelstadt had always possessed Farm 3 peacefully and undisturbed.

Based on the inheritance records and the witness statements the title of ownership for the 25 morgen and 150 square ruthen was transferred by decree to the married couple Christoph Gottlob and Anne Eleonore Mittelstaedt.  The wife acquired co-ownership in accordance with the principles of general marital community of property, as acknowledged in the proceedings of May 2, 1831.

The land record states that Anne Eleonore nee Fedder was born December 5, 1808.  However, her death register on January 9, 1877, says that she was 72 years old which results in a calculated birth year of 1804.  On other land records where a birth date is recorded the date can been verified correct by other records.  Anne Eleonore was born in Wischinhauland to the farmer Martin Fedder and his wife Anne Lenore Tumm.

On October 1, 1855, Gottfried Mittelstädt is listed as the owner of Farm 3.  He likely died in 1856.  At the time of the marriage of his son Michael on May 5, 1857, he is recorded as being deceased.  This was the year church records for Gembitzhauland began.  Gottfried (Gottlieb) was not listed as one of the deaths that year.

On April 22, 1856, Ludwig Otto, owner of Farm 7B, purchased a parcel of forest land measuring 159 square ruthen for three thalers from Gottfried and Anna Eleonore Mittelstadt.  This parcel was removed from Farm 3 and added to Farm 7B by a decree.

Friedrich Wilhelm Mittelstädt (1836-1900), the second son of Gottlieb and Eleonore MIttelstädt, became the owner of Farm 3 prior to 1863.  He married Rosine Wilhelmine Hoffmann (born 1841) December 22, 1861in Gembitzhauland.  She was the oldest daughter of the deceased farmer Martin Hoffmann and his wife Anna Rosina Krüger (1815-1865).  Martin Hoffmann prior to his death owned Farm 6.  Friedrich Wilhelm sold his property in portions after 1865.  In 1876 he is the owner of Farm 22.

Parcel 3B

On March 9, 1865, Michael Voss (1831-1866) contracted with Friedrich Wilhelm and Rosine Wilhelmine nee Hoffmann MIttelstädt to purchase 9 morgens for twenty-three thalers. The title deed for the new property was issued to him following the transfer from the main parcel of land on December 28, 1866. This transfer was recorded five months after Voss’ death from Cholera. The church records for Michael and his children list his occupation as a master shoemaker, not a farmer.  He was in the process of buying a rather large piece of property when he died.  Perhaps he was planning on becoming a farmer.

On April 8, 1867, the title to the property was corrected naming Caroline Voss, née Lorenz, Michael’s widow as the owner of parcel 3B.  Four weeks later the widow married Johann Gehlar, a stonemason from Gembitzhauland.  The couple had four children between 1868 and 1876.  Johann Gehlar, a cottager, is listed as the last entry on the Church Affairs records for the years 1876 and 1877.  He is not on the 1878 list.  Likely the couple moved to another village.

Parcel 3D & 3A

August Zellmer, the owner of Farm 1, purchased six morgen and 39 square ruthen from Gottlieb Wanke, acting as the authorized representative of Friedrich Wilhelm Mittelstaedt and his wife, for two hundred and ninety-eight thalers and twenty silver groschen.

Michael Erdmann, the owner of Farm 2A, purchased this parcel from the married couple August and Ernestine Zellmer for two hundred and ninety-five thalers based on the contracts dated April 6, 1865, and May 18, 1865, and further negotiations completed on November 28, 1866. This parcel was transferred from the main property Farm 3, on November 28, 1866.

On November 28, 1868, Michael and Anna Dorothea nee Krenz Erdmann sold half of the property to Friedrich Krenz for 150 thalers.  This partition was registered on November 28, 1871.  On the same date in 1871 the court confirmed that Michael Erdmann and his wife Anna Dorothea nee Krenz owned the property jointly.

Rentenkataster 1855 – 1920

The Rentenkataster lists only three owners of Farm 3:

  1. Gottfried Mittelstädt
  2. Friedrich Wilhelm Mittelstädt (1836-1900)
  3. August Kropp

Property Tax 1863-1865

The property tax records list Friedrich Wilhelm Mittelstädt as the sole owner of Farm 3.

Church Affairs and Parish Tax 1876- 1879

In each of the four years of the “Delegenheiten der Evangelischen Kirche” three main residents are listed as living on former Farm 3.

  1. Michael Schütz – a farmer owes a class tax of 9 Marks.
  2. Michael Erdmann – a cottager owes a class tax of 3 Marks
  3. Friedrich Krenz – a cottager owes a class tax of 3 Marks

Michael Schütz was born in 1844 to Ludwig Schütz and Rosina Marten.  In 1869 he married Ernestine Caroline Berndt, the daughter of Friedrich and Eva Rosine nee Krause Berndt in Romanshof, Kreis Czarnikau.  Their first daughter, Emilie Emma, was born on November 20, 1870.  In her baptism record Michael Schütz is listed as a farmer in Gembitzhauland. Their last recorded child was Marie Louise who died in 1879.  Adolf Herman Schütz’ death record in 1938 says that his parents died in Plönohenau, (unknown place likely in Mageburg) prior to that date.

Friedrich Krenz was born in 1840 to Gottlieb Krenz and Rosine Gehler, the former owners of Farm 2A.  He married Auguste Justine Just prior to 1877.  He died in 1889.

Building Register July 31, 1890

The building register for 1890 lists August Radetzke and Michael Erdmann living on these properties.

August Radetzke was born on December 6, 1861, in Christinchen, Kreis Kolmar.  He married Bertha Marie Zaft on September 19, 1885.  Bertha Marie Zaft was born on July 4, 1860, in Knarrhütte, Kreis Kolmar.  The 1922 community register says the couple moved to Gembitzhauland on April 15, 1886.  The couple had three children, all of whom died during childbirth.

Friedrich Krenz had died in 1889.  While his wife and children were still likely living on the property his brother-in-law Michael Erdmann is the sole person listed in the document.

In this record August Radetzki is a farmer living at house number 4.  He has a house with an attached horse barn and a shed with an attached cattle and pig barn.

Gustav Michael Siewert was born September 30, 1864, to Johann Christoph and Anna Dorothea nee Schendel Siewert the former day laborer on Farm 18 in Polajewohauland.  Gustav was the brother-in-law of Julius Jahnke, who is living on Farm 2B.  On April 15, 1903, he married Antonie Hulda Siewert.  Hulda Siewert was born on January 17, 1868, in Gembitzhauland to Adolph Siewert (born 1837) and Anne Wilhelmine Schendel (1844-1902).  Adolph, a stonemason in Gembitzhauland was the brother of the owner of Farm 2, Gustav Siebert.
